Explore the importance of animals in the historical and modern-day culture of Japan. See state-of-the-art science and application in Japanese animal agriculture, aquaculture, entertainment, and conservation efforts. Visit world-ranking agricultural universities, Itsukushima Shrine and Floating Torii gate, walk over Kintai-kyo Bridge, and revel in the beauty of the farm valleys nestled in the mountains of Hokkaido.

The objective of this experience is to promote an appreciation for the importance of animals in Japanese culture through provision of food, labor, companionship, and as part of the natural environment.

  • Tokyo: Nakano Shopping Area
  • Kumamoto: Tokai University, sightseeing 
  • Iwakuni: Itsukushima Shrine and Floating Torii Gate, walk over Kintai-kyo Bridge, visit Marine Corps Air Station
  • Kyoto: Animal Hospital visit, Kimono event at Arashiyama
  • Sendai: Sendai Uminomori Aquarium
  • Hakodate: Hakodate Yama Bus Tour, Hakodate Fish Auction and Fisherman’s Market, Goryo-Kaku visit
  • Saporro: Hokkaido University, Asahikawa Zoo, Olympic Ski Jump
  • Obihiro: Obihiro Ben’ai Museum of the Horse and Draft Horse Racecourse
Eligibility Requirements
  • At least freshman standing
Academic Credit

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a total of three (3) UTK credits. They will enroll in of the following course over the spring semester:
